Advocacy Committee
Our annual award goes to a woman in our community for her work Building a Better World for Women and Girls locally or around the world and exemplifies our club’s mission to “advance the status of women and girls worldwide through service and advocacy…” Ellen has done just that. As her nominator, Marta Lindrose explains in her nomination, “Ellen Marshall has dedicated her life to helping women, specifically to help women take control of their reproductive health. For more than 25 years her passion has helped to ‘Build a Better World for Women and Girls’ around the world.”
She is a past Zonta Foothills Club of Boulder County member and Past Club President who spent three decades working on U.S. foreign and domestic policy issues related to the health and rights of women and youth. From 2007 through 2016, Ellen developed and managed the public/private Colorado Initiative to Reduce Unintended Pregnancy which is recognized for reducing teen pregnancy rates in Colorado at unprecedented rates. Ellen has expertise on so many issues that impact women and she is an advocate who uses that knowledge to change their lives. She has worked on legislation and programs impacting domestic and international sexual and reproductive health and rights and HIV/AIDS prevention. For more than 20 years, Ellen:
oversaw US public policy initiatives on behalf of the International Women’s Health Coalition and with the National Family Planning and Reproductive Health Association (NFPRHA),
managed a grassroots education and fundraising campaign and supported other policy work for UNFPA, the United Nations Population Fund,
led legislative efforts to advance the development of HIV and pregnancy.
Currently Ellen is a state-wide advocative for Initiative 89, Coloradans for Reproductive Freedoms. which is working to get the reproductive rights codified into the state constitution.
Ellen Marshall has dedicated her life to help women and girls be in control of their education, their families, their careers. We recognize her commitment to making the world a better place for women and girls through our 2024 Zonta Foothills Club Woman of Achievement Award.
Ellen will be accepting our award at our March 14 business meeting. Please join us to hear her speak and to congratulate her.
A big thank you to Sharon Trumble, Sheila King, Elizabeth Freedman and Pam Malzbender for their commitment to this important cause. They have attended local events, spent an afternoon in the Front Range Community College student center, reached out to students at CU and even attended caucuses around the county. This is advocacy in action!
her college tuition by winning Constitutional debate competitions across the United States. The movie is described as “a hilarious, hopeful, and achingly human show…tracing the relationship between four generations of women and the founding document that shaped their lives.”
The Advocacy Committee is putting a club event togather around this interesting film. They are planning to purchase tickets ahead of time in order to reserve a block of seats for our club. At Thursday night’s business meeting Sharon Trumble will have a sign up. Hope you will all come. More details to follow!

March 12 symbolizes how far into the year women must work to earn what men earned in the previous year. The wage gap is even greater for women of color. According to the latest U.S. Census figures, women who work full time are paid on average just 84% of the typical man’s pay. Women still face barriers in accessing good-paying jobs, and carry a disproportionate burden for caregiving responsibilities in our society. Additionally, the lack of affordable childcare and paid family and medical leave contribute to women being unable to join the workforce or stay in the workforce. Pay equity and family friendly policies make good business sense and will help employers attract and retain the best talent. The COVID-19 pandemic has deepened existing inequalities and has made the problem of unequal pay more urgent.
The pay gap over time results in women saving less for retirement than men, earning lower pensions and social security payments, having a larger burden of student debt, and results in women having less economic security than male counterparts.
We encourage women to advocate for themselves; state and federal governments to enact legislation that ensures equal pay for women; and businesses to review their compensation policies to ensure that historical policies and pay practices are not unfairly disadvantaging women.
